I've managed technical support environments for as many as 100 users, including graphic design services, application development, and dedicated video services in a mixed Mac/PC/UNIX environment. I've installed WAN/LAN networks, and have more than 15 years hands-on experience with UNIX systems support and administration in scientific and technical environments.

I volunteer my technical support services for organizations targeting underserved groups. Email if you know someone who needs help.

IT director and management consultant

IT management, planning, and staffing; e-commerce application support (including web development), and move logistics: new network design and build out (including switched Gigabit Ethernet network connectivity to desktop computers, a Voice over Internet Protocol phone system, and switched wireless access); for National Motor Freight Traffic Association (NMFTA), Alexandria, Virginia. (2006-2007)

Software engineering manager

I defined, implemented, and customized eCRM software to support web-based software engineering issues management, and to publish solutions to an integrated knowledge base for secure customer access (using Sun® Solaris® 8, Apache, Perl/DBI & MyS QL); for Kabira Technologies, Inc. (2000-2001)

Digital Production Studio systems manager

The Digital Production Studio (DPS) was a state-of-the-art production environment, with fully configured Silicon Graphics (SGI) Onyx and Challenge supercomputers and SGI desktops on a separate ATM network, and a high-end Macintosh multimedia designer user community. Production environment software included Avid, Flint & Flame.

I managed design and installation of the DPS’s state-of-the-art switched ethernet network with fiber backbone (over a weekend!). Other work for the DPS included UNIX network engineering and system administration for the supercomputing systems; for Kaizen Works Inc. under contract to Bell Atlantic Video Services’ TELE-TV Media Digital Production Studio (DPS) (1995-1996).

UNIX systems manager

Dante II graphic

As UNIX systems manager I supported Dante (Dante II is pictured left), a tethered robot controlled, via satellite and Internet connections, by a team from NASA, Carnegie Mellon University, the Alaska Volcano Observatory, and other organizations (1991-1994). We ran a live demo from the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum, letting school children remotely take Dante for a spin.

Maintained Silicon Graphics UNIX systems in direct support of telerobotics, remote sensing, computational fluid dynamics, low vision, and other scientific and technical projects for NASA’s Office of Advanced Concepts and Technology.

IT Project Manager

For NASA’s OCP, I managed technical support services for 100 users, with graphics design services, application development team, UNIX administration, network services, and Internet information initiatives. Defined technology direction and user requirements; consulted to the National Technology Transfer Center and Small Business Innovation Research program; for Boeing Information Services under contract to NASA Headquarters Office of Commercial Programs (OCP) (1987-1994).

Federal ADP Consultant

Worked as a federal consultant to plan, develop, and implement the information systems environment for NASA Headquarters Office of Space Access and Technology (1989).
